At the Indian Doctors Association of Houston, we believe mentorship is a cornerstone of professional and personal growth. As physicians of Indian origin, many of us have benefitted from the guidance of mentors who helped us navigate the challenges of medical training and practice. To continue this tradition, we have developed structured mentorship programs in partnership with local medical schools. Through these initiatives, our members provide one-on-one guidance, career advice, and networking opportunities for medical students and trainees. These programs are designed not only to support the next generation of physicians in their academic and professional journeys but also to instill in them the values of service, leadership, and community that define our association.
MEDICAL STUDENT MENTORSHIP: In partnership with the South Asian student organizations of the Houston medical schools, the Indian Doctors Association has organized panel discussion forums where various members of IDA have participated and provided guidance and information based on their broad experiences and backgrounds. While mentorship is provided in all educational curricula, IDA has the opportunity to provide guidance from individuals from various specialties with various practice patterns ( employed, academic, private & research) and backgrounds.
A one on one mentorship program is currently being organized to match up volunteer mentors from our membership to interested students. Any interested IDA members please email your intent to serve as mentors to [email protected].
WOMEN IN MEDICINE MENTORSHIP:  Women physicians face various challenges in needing to balance life with  responsibilities at home, family and career ambitions while maneuvering potential gender inequities prevalent in todays world. IDA has launched the DEISHA initiative in 2025 to support, inspire, and provide a forum for networking, mentoring, advocacy and leadership development for women physicians. The program will aim to:
1.Develop and organize events, workshops, and seminars focused on leadership, career advancement, and personal well-being of women in medicine.
2.Promote mentorship opportunities for women physicians at all career stages.
3. Advocate for equitable opportunities and representation of women in healthcare.
4. Collaborate with other agencies that are aiming to create a community with a culture of inclusivity and respect.
5. Serve as a resource hub for networking, education, and empowerment of female physicians.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS: Thanks to generous contributions from IDA members, we have been giving out up to 5 scholarships annually to deserving high school students. Applications are submitted through collaboration with school districts in the greater Houston area and with an objective scoring system based on merit, social responsibilities and need students are selected to receive these scholarships.
